Chattanooga Mesothelioma Attorney

Asbestos exposure is dangerous. It is universally recognized as a human carcinogen. There is no known level of asbestos exposure considered safe. It can cause a variety of physical problems, disability and even death.

Unfortunately, many individuals have been and continue to be exposed to asbestos, either in the workplace or at home (doing home renovation projects or shadetree mechanic work). Family members may have been exposed at home either by washing the contaminated clothing of loved ones who were exposed in the workplace or by using Johnson’s baby powder. The attorneys at Summers, Rufolo & Rodgers have been involved in asbestos and mesothelioma litigation for over 30 years. We know these cases because we’ve handled them and still are handling them. The members of our firm have substantial and unique experience in this complex and ever-changing area of the law.

What Is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a cancerous condition uniquely associated with asbestos exposure but not wholly dependent on such exposure. (See below.) It differs from but is closely related to lung cancer. Whereas lung cancer can be caused by many things such as smoking, genetics, certain chemicals or metals, asbestos, or some combination of these and other factors, the chief cause of mesothelioma is asbestos.
Mesothelioma can take years — even decades — to develop, and there are three types:

  • Peritoneal mesothelioma
  • Pleural mesothelioma
  • Pericardial mesothelioma

Regardless of the type, the grim reality is that mesothelioma is essentially a death sentence. Learn more by reviewing these frequently asked questions.

Were You Exposed To Asbestos?

Our office has handled cases for many clients who work or live in or around the greater Chattanooga area.

Because of our area’s industrial legacy, certain professions are particularly at risk of injury from asbestos exposure.

Many individuals have worked for or had some association with the DuPont, Combustion Engineering or TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority) facilities in this area. Pipefitters, insulators, machinists, electricians, boilermakers and even individuals washing the clothing of these employees were at risk for asbestos exposure.

Did you work in one of the at-risk occupations? We can help you respond if you were exposed to asbestos at work.

Is it possible to acquire mesothelioma without exposure to asbestos?

Although asbestos is by far the biggest risk factor for developing mesothelioma, asbestos exposure does not account for every single case.  For example, a volcanic mineral, known as erionite, can also cause mesothelioma. Like asbestos, erionite is a fibrous material that belongs to a group of minerals called zeolites. Erionite is found in the United States, particularly in North Dakota and western states, It’s also prevalent in gravel quarries or road construction projects.
