Serious side effects from Xarelto

Xarelto is a blood thinner that has been prescribed to help reduce people's risk of developing blood clots, but it may be a dangerous drug due to unexpected side effects. Tennessee residents who underwent hip or knee replacement surgeries may have been given this drug to prevent deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. A pulmonary embolism is when a vein in the lungs becomes blocked due to a blood clot. Deep vein thrombosis is when blood clots form deep in the veins. Along with being prescribed for people who undergo hip and knee surgeries, the FDA also approved Xarelto for individuals with certain heart conditions to prevent blood clots.

Blood clots in the lungs are dangerous. Clots that form in the veins may travel to the lungs and result in a pulmonary embolism.

The drug has a number of common side effects, including headaches, bowel issues, dark colored urine, and breathing difficulty. However, there is another severe, and unexpected side effect:  it may cause people to become susceptible to internal or external bleeding. Since the drug limits the blood's ability to clot, this puts people at risk of excessive bleeding.

A defective drug can be incredibly harmful to individuals who take it. Depending on why it is defective, it may fail to treat someone's medical condition, harm the person through dangerous side effects, or cause new medical conditions. In some extreme cases, defective drugs may lead to a person's death. People who have been harmed as a result may want to meet with an attorney to see if there is any available legal recourse.
