Mock crashes show teens the real-world impact of drunk driving

A series of mock crashes, staged by a consortium of safety organizations acting in concert with local law enforcement and the Tennessee Department of Public Safety, aims to show teen drivers the potentially disastrous implications of bad driving-related decisions.

The productions, which have taken place in locales across the state over the past month, come complete with smoldering wreckage, an extensive emergency response from law enforcement and ambulance teams, and student actors playing the role of victims. The scenarios range from crashes caused by distracted driving and aggressive driving to drunk driving-related fatalities.

The idea behind these faux accidents, which have taken place across the country for years now at the behest of police agencies and such organizations as Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), is to give teen drivers an up-close and personal look at how split-second bad choices will impact them in the real world. That will hopefully prevent such behaviors from becoming reality. They also serve as training exercises for law enforcement, EMS and firefighters who routinely respond to such crashes.

It is hoped in particular that the lessons learned by the DUI/DWI crashes will get through to the next generation of Tennessee's drivers. Drunk driving kills an average of nearly 400 drivers and passengers in the state each year. Maybe exposing young drivers to the potential devastation of these accidents early on will deter them from the choices that would lead to such incidents in the future.

If you or someone you love is injured in a crash caused by a distracted, drunk, reckless or otherwise negligent driver, you may have legal claims. Consult an experienced personal injury attorney in your area to learn more about your rights and possible actions.

Additionally, if you or someone you love was the driver in a crash in which the issue of drunk or reckless driving has been raised or charged, then you need an experienced criminal defense attorney to represent you. The consequences are significant for a DUI conviction, and if there are injuries or death resulting from an accident in which alcohol was involved, then the consequences can be much more severe.
