Minimize The Risk Of Explosion As A User Of E-Cigarettes

How safe are e-cigarettes?

Sure, they are convenient, run by lithium-ion batteries that power up quickly and hold a charge for an extended period. In some cases, however, e-cigarettes have caused severe injuries. As we discussed in a post last month, many of these injuries were caused by e-cigarette explosions.

What causes e-cigarettes to explode and, most importantly, how can users of e-cigarettes stay safe?

How extensive is the problem?

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reported an estimated 2,035 emergency room visits from burns caused by e-cigarette explosions between 2015 and 2017. This number is believed to be an underestimate.

Who is to blame for e-cigarette explosions?

There are a variety of reasons why e-cigarettes explode. Lithium-ion batteries can malfunction due to manufacturer defects and poor design. There can be inadequate ventilation surrounding the batteries and poor insulation. Explosions can also be the result of manufacturers installing faulty or counterfeit batteries to cut costs.

However, in some cases, e-cigarette users can be at fault if they do not use the device according to the manufacturer's instructions. This includes dropping the device, using a cheap charger or exposing it to extreme temperatures.

Users can take safety precautions

If you are not yet ready to break your vaping habit, there are things you can do to minimize the risk of injury.

Consider adhering to these tips to stay safe while vaping:

  • Do not modify an e-cigarette, such as changing the heating coil
  • Do not overcharge the device
  • Use the recommended power source for charging
  • Avoid exposure to extreme temperatures
  • Keep your device away from water
  • Do not use your device if it is damaged

Understand your situation

If you have been injured because of an e-cigarette explosion, you may be entitled to compensation. A seasoned product liability lawyer can help you to determine your rights.
