Tips for safe grilling this summer

As summertime draws near, many Tennessee families look forward to enjoying the summer heat outside and grilling - even in this time of social distancing from friends and neighbors.

Even if you are just grilling for the family this Memorial Day weekend and throughout this summer, it is critical to ensure you take measures to stay safe. Grilling might feel like second nature to many, especially during the summertime, but it involves a high risk of injury.

Grilling is more dangerous than you might think

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reports that:

  • Between 2014 and 2018, grill fires sent 19,700 people to the emergency room with serious burns and injuries; and
  • Each year, grills cause roughly 8,900 house fires.

It is critical that you do not overlook these risks when you go out to grill for the family this season, but how can you stay safe?

Essential grilling safety tips

Thankfully, there are measures you can take to prevent the risk of a serious accident when you grill for the family this summer.

It is helpful to familiarize yourself with your grill - regardless of whether it is new or old. Review the manual and check your grill to ensure it is in good shape for use. You should also:

  • Keep the grill at least 10 feet away from your house;
  • Ensure the grill is a safe distance from trees or lawn furniture;
  • Check the propane tank for leaks and if you have enough gas;
  • Have a fire extinguisher nearby whenever you grill;
  • Wear proper clothing when grilling; and
  • Clean your grill regularly after using it.

Taking some extra steps this summer could help ensure your safety, as well as that of your family and your home.
