HHS report finds patient neglect, false billing in hospice care provided under Medicare

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Inspector General has just released a report on hospice care provided through Medicare. After synthesizing patient records and Medicare patient data from more than a decade, the Inspector General concluded that, while most patients can rely on hospice care to relieve their suffering, some hospice providers are neglecting patients and billing for services that were unnecessary or not provided.

Use of antipsychotics in nursing homes down but still a problem

Many nursing homes across the country have been accused of using antipsychotic medications to sedate patients. CDC: Elderly suffer brain injuries at higher rate than others

With the increasing media attention on concussions and mild brain injuries, and the increased risk they create for more serious brain trauma, health officials and others have been paying more attention to brain injuries. Given the increased awareness, it is not surprising reports of brain injuries are up, especially among Americans 75 and older. Apparently falls may be responsible for the increase in that age group.

High-profile nursing home tragedy highlights systemic neglect

Hurricane Irma devastated a huge swath of Florida and the Gulf Coast in September. News reports abounded of record-breaking property damage, serious injuries and, tragically, fatalities. Among the most heartbreaking of the stories was the deaths of nine residents at a Miami-area nursing home.

Over 1 out of every 4 cases of nursing home abuse are unreported

The inspector general's office of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recently issued a highly critical report about elder abuse and neglect. An audit found that more than 1 out of every 4 cases of suspected physical or sexual abuse of nursing home patients is never reported to police. This is the case despite a law requiring police be notified of suspected abuse immediately.
