Tennessee Highway Patrol DUI quotas: Is! Is not!

It is ironic that many labor problems develop because management is often lazy. Oh, they put in an 8-hour day, or longer, but they are lazy in an intellectual sense. They are often uninterested in the realities of the frontline workforce, and do not want to expend too much thought on the performance of an individual.

Officer resigns because of allegations from DUI stop

Many people mistake being arrested and charged with a crime with being convicted of a crime. When you have been charged with a crime, such as drunk driving, the presumption is that the police or Tennessee Highway Patrol had a genuine reason to pull your vehicle over and execute a traffic stop.

Quotas are corrosive for public trust of THP

A DUI case from Johnson City is raising allegations of Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) troopers being required to meet DUI quotas. The THP denies these allegations, but an email from one district suggests that troopers are "encouraged" to meet district averages and are to help other troopers who may be "falling behind" with their number of DUI arrests.

The THP wants zero highway fatalities in Tennessee

The Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) has a goal. When you think of sports, usually the object is to score as many goals as possible. For the THP, the goal is zero. The zero is the number of fatal traffic accidents that occur on the roads and highways of Tennessee.

If you are asleep at the wheel, can you also be DUI?

A man was arrested last week on a DUI. That is not that remarkable a fact. That he was arrested for his fifth DUI was not the most remarkable element of the arrest. What most people will find interesting in this case is that he was arrested while asleep behind the wheel.

Increases in Chattanooga and Tennessee DUI arrests

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) announced that DUI arrests increased in Chattanooga, both by local police and Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP). The report also showed more arrests across the state, with 29,554 in 2014, which was up by 639 from 2013.

No one is immune to being charged with a DUI

DUIs are democratic. No, we don't mean the political party, we mean that they cut across all demographic lines, rich and poor, famous and unknown, young and old. Sometimes we will be shocked that a well-known politician or celebrity is stopped for drinking and driving. Others may be less unexpected.

Dollree Mapp and the exclusionary rule, pt.2

When law enforcement violates the constitution, the courts are faced with a difficult problem. The Constitution, as the enabling law from which all other federal and state laws obtain their validity, lacks one important feature. It has no enforcement mechanism for violations.
